PHOTOGraphie’s free workshop for high school aged youth continues to be a popular part of this rich, community based festival. On October 2nd at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster BC, a group of budding photographers had the opportunity to learn some great fundamental skills from one of Canada’s best photographers.
Nikon Ambassador Nick Didlick covered not only the technical aspects of exposure in easy to understand terms, but also demonstrated the creative aspects of lighting, background and composition. There was plenty of time for questions and some hands on instruction while the participants photographed two ballet models.

Makayla Goldsmith, one of the participants from the 1st workshop said, “The workshop was fantastic! I use the skills I learned at the workshop all the time now and I’ve seen my photography improve quite a lot. I learned more in that one day then I have in 2 years of photography courses at school!”
This workshop is one component of the Youth Program at PHOTOGraphie that also includes an exciting contest. Entries are closed now and the top 18 finalists have been chosen. Their images will be printed and exhibited in the PHOTOGraphie Gallery Exhibition, November 4-6 at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster. Each finalist will receive:
- a $50 Pix Portal gift card and the top winner an additional $150 gift card
- Four tickets to the Gallery Exhibition Opening Night – Fri Nov 4.
- One ticket to the Keynote Speaker Nino Rakichevich on Sun Nov 6.
- A finalist certificate to be presented at the PHOTOGraphie Awards Ceremony – Sat Nov 5.

One of the 18 finalists will be the lucky Grand Prize winner and receive a Nikon Camera, to be presented at the Awards Ceremony. Tickets are still available for you to come and celebrate with the finalists and of course you are also invited to see the full gallery exhibition (for free) at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster Sat Nov 5 and Sun Nov 6 from 9:00 to 5:00.
